În anii '60 în New York, Walter Stackhouse (Patrick Wilson) este un arhitect de succes căsătorit cu frumoasa Clara (Jessica Biel), ducând o viață aparent perfectă. Dar fascinația lui legată de o crimă nerezolvată îl conduce într-o spirală haotică, fiind forțat să se joace de-a șoarecele și pisica cu un criminal inteligent și cu un detectiv deosebit de ambițios, în același timp născându-se în el o pasiune pentru o altă femeie.
