Acțiunea îl prezintă pe Reacher în drum spre vechea sa bază militară din Virginia, pentru a lua cina cu o femeie numită recent comandatul bazei. Însă, când ajunge acolo, este acuzat de acte de violență asupra unui coleg și de viol. Cum nu-și amintește de niciuna dintre aceste "scăpări", protagonistul este hotărât să facă totul pentru a ieși basma curată și a scoate adevărul la lumină.
