Gernika este o poveste de dragoste despre orașul basc bombardat de aviația nazistă in timpul Războiului Civil Spaniol în aprilie 1937. În acest context, tânăra Teresa (Maria Valverde), un editor republican se ciocneste cu Henry (James D’Arcy), un jurnalist american de ore mici, care acoperă fațada de nord. Teresa, curtata de șeful său, Vasyl (Jack Davenport), consilier rus al guvernului republican, va fi atras de idealismul lui. Însă în ciuda sentimentelor reciproce, faptul că unul dintre ei nu este liber începe să le creeze mai multe probleme decât războiul propriu-zis.
