Personajul principal, Cross, este un dintre cei mai buni agenti CIA. Cu toate ca nu are dovezi certe privind tradarea lui Cross, McLoud, seful acestuia, trimite o serie de agenti sa il ucida. Cross reuseste sa se salveze atat pe el cat si pe sotia sa. Va fugi la Viena unde are un prieten de o viata, Zharkov, un spion sovietic. Pe urmele sale, CIA trimite un asasin francez apreciat pentru eficienta si sangele rece de care da dovada, un prieten de-al lui Cross, care l-a sfatuit sa aiba grija, caci poate in viitorul apropiat CIA ii va cere sa il ucida pe el, si poate intr-o zi CIA va trimite un alt asasin pentru al asasina si pe Jean.
