În centrul atenţiei este Richie (Justin Timberlake), un student de o inteligenţă sclipitoare care se aruncă în lumea poker-ului online pentru a-şi plăti taxele şcolare. Când se consideră înşelat, îl confruntă în Costa Rica pe organizatorul jocului, Ivan Block (Affleck). Richie se lasă vrăjit de promisiunile financiare ale lui Block şi de exotica lume în care trăieşte acesta şi acceptă să lucreze pentru el, dar nu va trece mult până va ajunge să regrete decizia.
