Val (interpretat de Al Pacino) este proaspăt ieșit din pușcărie, unde își petrecuse ultimii 28 de ani, pedeapsă la care fusese condamnat pentru "vina" de a fi refuzat să-și denunțe complicele. Cel mai bun prieten al său, Doc (interpretat de Christopher Walken) îl așteaptă la poarta închisorii. Celor doi li se alătură Hirsch (interpretat de Alan Arkin), și el prieten vechi al celor doi răufăcători. Deși s-au scurs atâția ani, prietenia dintre ei a rămas la fel de puternică și, împreună, își amintesc cu nostalgie de vremea lor de glorie. În ciuda faptului că sunt de mult trecuți de prima tinerețe, forța și priceperea le-au rămas intacte. În încercarea lor disperată și, uneori, ridicolă, de a recupera anii de crime, droguri și sex pe care i-au pierdut, cei trei provoacă haos și distrugere pe oriunde trec, cu gloanțele șuierându-le pe la urechi.
Însă unul dintre ei ascunde un secret periculos, care le va pune viața în pericol - un fost șef al mafiei îl obligă să facă o alegere imposibilă. Cum timpul rămas la dispoziție pentru a găsi o soluție de ieșire din impas este extrem de scurt, cei trei vechi prieteni devin din ce în ce mai disperați și sunt obligați, în cele din urmă, să se confrunte cu trecutul lor.
