Călătoria în timp este ilegală şi deci disponibilă numai pe piaţa neagră. Atunci când mafia vrea să scape de cineva nedorit, membrii acesteia trimit victima cu treizeci de ani înapoi în timp unde un ucigaş plătit - aşa cum este şi Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – aşteaptă să lichideze ţinta. Joe câştigă bine şi viaţa lui pare să fie foarte bună până când mafia decide să închidă cercul şi să scape de ucigaş, aşa ca îl trimit înapoi în timp chiar pe Joe din viitor (Bruce Willis). Acţiunea filmului se petrece în 2044 când călătoriile în timp nu sunt încă posibile, dar treizeci de ani în viitor da, şi sunt controlate de mafie cu un singur scop: pentru a ucide oameni. Filmul este regizat de Rian Johnson, iar din distributia filmului fac parte Joseph Gordon Levitt (Începutul), Bruce Willis (Greu de pensionat) si Emily Blunt (Gardienii destinului) alaturi de care ii mai intalnim pe: Paul Dano, Noah Segan, Piper Perabo, Jeff Daniels, Xu Qing, Garret Dillahunt si Pierce Gagnon.
