Omul de ştiinţă şi inventatorul Alexander Hartdegen (GUY PEARCE) este hotărât să dovedească faptul că o călătorie în timp este posibilă. Hotărârea lui e transformată în disperare de o tragedie personală care îl motivează acum să vrea să schimbe trecutul. Testându-şi teoriile cu o maşină a timpului inventată chiar de el, Hartdegen este aruncat 800.000 de ani în viitor, unde descoperă că omenirea s-a împărţit în vânători… şi vânaţi.
Bazat pe romanul clasic SF al lui H.G. Welles, Maşina timpului îl are în rolul principal pe GUY PEARCE (Memento, L.A. Confidenţial) care îl interpretează pe Alexander Hartdegen. Făcându-şi debutul că actriţă, cântăreaţă/compozitoare născută la Dublin, SAMANTHA MUMBA, joacă alături de PEARCE în rolul Mara, femeia care îl însoţeşte pe Hartdegen în viitorul îndepărtat. Distribuţia internaţională îi mai cuprinde pe ORLANDO JONES (Evolution – Evoluţie), MARK ADDY (The Full Monty – Gol puşcă , SIENNA GUILLORY (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), PHYLLIDA LAW (Saving Grace) şi actorul distins cu premiul Oscar JEREMY IRONS (Reversal of Fortune, Die Hard With a Vengeance).
O co-producție a studiourilor DreamWorks Pictures și Warner Bros. Pictures, Mașina timpului marchează debutul regizoral la un film de lung-metraj al lui SIMON WELLS, care anterior a co-regizat filmul de animație The Prince of Egypt (Prințul Egiptului). WELLS regizează Mașina timpului după un scenariu de JOHN LOGAN (Gladiator - Gladiatorul) și DAVID DUNCAN. WALTER F. PARKES (Gladiator, Men in Black II și DAVID VALDES (The Green Mile - Culoarul morții) sunt producătorii acestui film, alături de LAURIE MacDONALD, ARNOLD LEIBOVIT și JORGE SARALEGUI care sunt producători executivi.
