Prin adoptarea Convenţiei pentru Salvarea Patrimoniului Cultural Imaterial din 2003, UNESCO s-a implicat īn conservarea tradiţiilor şi a expresiilor orale (inclusiv al limbilor), al artelor spectacolului (muzică, dans şi teatru tradiţionale), practici sociale, ritualuri, cunoştiinţe şi practici legate de natură şi de univers, cunoştiinţe legate de artizanatul tradiţional. Īn acest moment, lista conţine 90 de elemente reprezentative; printre ele se află şi dansul Căluşarilor.
Seria Living Cultures prezintă treisprezece capodopere ale spiritului uman, toate pe cale de dispariţie, dar esenţiale pentru omenire.

Īn nordul fluviului Amazon, īn una dintre cele mai inaccesibile păduri ale Braziliei, populaţia Wajapi duce o existenţă ferită de influenţele moderne. Fugind de omul alb, de bolile sale, de masacre şi de distrugerea pădurilor, ei īncearcă să-şi păstreze identitatea şi modul de viaţă.
Pentru ei, vopsitul pielii īn roşu este o modalitate de a menţine legătura cu străvechea lor civilizaţie. Populaţia Wajapi foloseşte de sute de ani coloranţi vegetali ca să-şi īmpodobească trupurile cu diverse simboluri, precum şerpi, jaguari, fluturi sau oase de peşte. Acest mod de comunicare singular reflectă viziunea lor asupra lumii şi le permite să transmită cunoştinţe despre viaţa comunităţii.
