-It’s the late 1980s, when Wall Street is riding high, and it seems as if the entire country is cashing in on the bumper profits. Disgusted with the materialism that surrounds him, Matt Franklin, a brilliant young MIT graduate, has walked out on his well-paid position at a local lab and taken a low-level job as a video clerk, much to his father Bill’s consternation. And the crises keep piling up in Matt’s life. His best buddy Barry has just gotten fired from his job, his brainy sister Wendy is getting hitched to her vapid boyfriend Kyle, and the gorgeous Tori Frederking, long-time object of Matt’s unattainable adoration, is suddenly back in the picture. Vara anului 1988 este pe sfârșite în San Fernando Valley, iar Matt Franklin, sora lui geamănă Wendy și cel mai bun prieten al lor Barry Nathan refuză să își asume responsabilitățile unor adulți, deși sunt la vârsta la care ar trebui să își stabilescă scopuri precise în viață.

Matt a absolvit cu brio prestigiosul colegiu MIT, iar prietenii și familia se așteptau să se angajeze la una dintre cele mai faimoase companii din țară, cu un salariu pe măsură, dar tânărul în vârstă de 23 de ani a acceptat în schimb o modestă slujbă cu jumătate de normă la un magazin de casete video din localitate. Ambiția lui Matt se trezește în momentul în care în magazin intra frumoasă Tori Frederking, fata visurilor lui încă din perioada liceului, invitându-l la o petrecere sălbatică ocazionată de Ziua Muncii. În cursul acestei nopți de distracție, Matt, Wendy și Barry fac un pas important pe calea maturizării, Matt Franklin fabricându-și o identitate falsă pentru a o impresiona pe Tori, Wendy Franklin fiind cerută în căsătorie de către iubitul ei din liceu Kyle Masterson, iar Barry Nathan, care tocmai a fost concediat, explorându-și latura întunecată.
