CAZUL 39 prezintă o poveste intensă, legată de teroarea psihologică trăită de o asistentă socială ce descoperă o forță a răului mai mare decât și-ar fi imaginat cineva, atunci când încearcă să salveze o copilă care în mod misterios, nu mai vorbește.
Emily Jenkins (Renee Zellweger, actriță distinsă cu premiul Oscar) este o asistentă socială foarte devotată și cu experiență, care își închipuie că le-a văzut pe toate – minciuni, neglijență nepăsare, abuzuri de tot felul. Vine ziua în care trebuie să preia Cazul 39: o fetiță de 10 ani, Lilith Sullivan (Jodelle Ferland), abandonată de familie, tulburată și în stare de șoc. Intervine Emily. Zguduită de singurătatea și inocența fetiței, femeia decide să facă ceea ce nu și-a mai îngăduit niciodată în trecut: să se implice personal. Cu speranța în inimă că face ceea ce e corect, Emily îi oferă lui Lilith un cămin fericit pînă să îi poată găsi o familie adoptivă.
Dar abia acum începe adevărata teroare.
Ce a împins familia lui Lilith spre punctul distrugerii? De ce oricine vine în contact cu Lilith pare să își piardă subit mințile? Cum va putea supraviețui Emily groazei devastatoare ce o macină în secret? Pentru a descoperi adevărul, Emily trebuie să lase la o parte rațiunea și să se confrunte cu cele mai îngrozitoare coșmaruri, din clipa în care pășește într-un tărâm supranatural, unde răul iese la pradă printre oameni.
Acum, singurul lucru de care trebuie să se teamă cu adevărat Emily este puterea fricii din lăuntrul ei.
