În viitor, ființele umane trăiesc izolate, folosind roboți înlocuitori (surogatele din titlu), cu un aspect asemănător dar îmbunătățit în comparație cu originalul uman, pentru activitățile sociale. Când roboții încep să fie distruși printr-o metodă care duce și la uciderea "operatorului" uman, un detectiv (Willis) ajunge să descopere o adevărată conspirație. Cum surogatul său are parte de aceeași soartă, bărbatul este obligat să-și părăsească locuința pentru prima oară în ani de zile și să pornească în lume pentru a-l descoperi pe criminal.
