Shawn MacArthur este un tanar originar dintr-un oras de provincie, avand un tata care il tine la distanta si un trecut marcat de o teribila tragedie, care vine la New York si incearca sa isi castige traiul din vanzarea unor marfuri contrafacute. Norocul pare sa ii surada atunci cand il intalneste din intamplare pe experimentatul antrenor Harvey Boarden, care ii observa talentul natural pentru lupta si il introduce in lumea intunecoasa si violenta a batailor ilegale de strada.
Intr-un univers vicios si corupt, in care cei bogati pariaza pe concurenti ca si cum acestia ar fi niste pioni insignifianti pe tabla lor de sah, Shawn MacArthur devine peste noapte o vedeta, invingand rand pe rand boxeri profesionisti sau campioni la arte martiale si devenind tot mai puternic pe masura ce luptele devin mai brutale. Insa pentru a obtine un consistent premiu in bani si pentru a scapa de lumea tenebroasa in care s-a trezit aruncat, baiatul trebuie sa iasa invingator din cea mai dura confruntare din viata lui.
