Wade Porter (Stephen Dorff) e un soț iubitor, cu un viitor promițător, însă lucrurile iau o turnură diferită în viața lui în momentul în care îl ucide accidental pe un hoț care voia să îi fure din casă. Fiind condamnat pentru crimă, Wade este închis într-o instituție de maximă securitate pentru 3 ani. Aflat în închisoare, el descoperă că regulile din societate nu se mai aplică și în închisoare. Avându-l ca partener de celulă pe un criminal notoriu și fiind supus unor tratamente inumane de către un gardian al închisorii, Wade realizează că singura sa șansă de supraviețuire este să devină cel mai puternic dintre deținuți. Ceea ce nu te ucide, te face mai puternic, iar în închisoare doar cei puternici supraviețuiesc.
