shooters have been one of pc gaming's preeminent genres for about 10 years now, and those who'veFirst-person shooters have been one of PC gaming's preeminent genres for about 10 years now, and those who've kept up with it over the years know that, for one thing, these games have gotten a lot more complicated. Whereas the early games that defined the genre gave you no incentive other than to blast your way from one end of a level to the other--or they had you blasting any other player that moved, in the case of their multiplayer modes--today's most-popular shooters feature complex team-based modes, deep narratives, and Hollywood-style trappings. Not Painkiller. This game is a throwback to the older classics. Specifically, it's a throwback to id Software's Quake, whose multiplayer deathmatch mode popularized an aggressively fast-paced style of play. Painkiller is a simple game at heart, but it's very well-put-together and does what it does exceedingly well. That is, it offers up lots of spectacularly visceral, bloody, in-your-face action through its numerous, action-packed single-player levels. And it looks beautiful, it sounds great, and it's got a pretty good old-school multiplayer deathmatch mode, for good measure. If you enjoyed the genre's pre-Half-Life classics or more-recent arcade shooters like Serious Sam, then you'll love Painkiller. Painkiller is a throwback to the days when first-person shooters were all about action--and it's a great throwback, at that. Painkiller does have a plot, which isn't evident and doesn't unfold at all during the actual levels, but it's presented in fairly unimpressive and surprisingly drawn-out cutscenes in between the game's five chapters. After dying in a car accident, Daniel Garner finds himself in purgatory, which is somewhere between heaven and hell. He's given a choice that's not much of a choice at all: The forces of hell are planning to wage war on heaven, and Garner must single-handedly head them off at the pass, while also setting his sights on the four generals of Lucifer's army. So Dan takes the job--lucky you. This means you get to kill lots and lots of monsters using some overpowered weapons, and, at the end of each chapter, you'll square off against a huge and towering boss monster. Painkiller's two-dozen single-player levels offer no nonsense. Each level is self-contained and starts you off with full health and a limited amount of ammunition. Progress through the stages is basically linear, and an onscreen compass needle is there to (usually) always point you to where the enemies are or to where the next checkpoint is. What happens is, enemies materialize in your vicinity, some heavy metal music starts playing, and you start shooting--often while desperately trying to run away from your savage foes. Once the coast is clear, you can catch your breath, cross the next checkpoint, automatically regain all your health (at the default difficulty), and then repeat the process. This isn't complicated stuff--but that's not a bad thing at all. The action is fast, bloody, and intense. Just like any good shooter should be. This isn't the depiction of hell or purgatory that you might expect. Rather than have levels consisting of all flames, demons, and caverns, Painkiller consists of a wide variety of different themes. As a result, the game may have you blasting zombies and lunatic freaks in a haunted insane asylum in one level, battling ninjas and samurai in an opera house in another, gunning down weird biker-thugs in industrial complexes in the next, and then taking on knights and mad monks in a medieval castle after that. Remarkably, the eclectic variety of settings somehow ends up having a cohesive feel to it, and the variety itself is definitely to the game's credit. Though not all the game's enemies behave differently, it's great to encounter different types of foes in almost every stage, and the game just does a good job of keeping you guessing as to what sort of weird location you'll find yourself in next. Aşa mi-a fost mie caracterul. Obraznic n-am fost niciodată. Mai furam un pepene, mai mergeam la cireşe, pierdeam caprele. Ele fug, sunt independente precum pisica. Zburau prin alte grădini, mâncau varza şi morcovii, oamenii se supărau şi mergeau la tata, iar tata mă mai pocnea cu câteva curele pe spate. Ştiam anotimpurile pe dinafară, ştiam recoltele pe dinafară, ştiam semănatul, treieratul. Veneau carele cu boi încărcate de recoltele extrordinar de bogate pentru că pământul era gras, nu era ciopârţit şi decimat de substanţe chimice. Tot ceea ce mâncai, mâncai natural. Nu existau E-uri în mâncare, nici nu ştiam ce înseamnă aia. Păi, mi-am făcut cruce şi am crezut că halucinez când am văzut în piaţă, pe o bucată de hârtie, „Roşii cu gust“. „Peşte proaspăt“, „Ouă proaspete“. Dar cum vrei să fie? Peşte vechi sau ouă vechi? Mâncam natural, ţăranii noştri erau ţărani sănătoşi, puternici. Îmi plăceau activităţile rurale la nebunie pentru că eram în natură. Dacă îi arată acum unui copil din Bucureşti o cioară, o vrabie şi o rândunică, spune că e... liliac. (A pierdut contactul cu natura). „Sunt băiatul lui Tudor Zamfir, zis Băcanul, vreau să cânt la staţie“ Ascultai ceea ce ţi se transmitea dintr-o staţie de radio montată de comunişti în fiecare localitate importantă, unde ei aveau nevoie de propagandă. S-a ajuns şi la ţară. Noi eram dopaţi cu aceste difuzoare şi cu ce se transmiteau. Numai slogane, conferinţe, versuri, cântece comuniste. Toţi compozitorii ăştia mai serioşi şi mai cu talent au fost puşi să compună pentru comunism. Toţi poeţii, Eugen Jebeleanu, mai era unul foarte comunist, Alexandru Toma, care a scris „Silvester Andrei salvează abatajul“, Veronica Porumbacu. Unii îşi făceau versuri obligaţi, din dorinţa de a-şi salva viaţa sub comunişti. Mihai Beniuc, care a scris celebra poezie „Sunt măr de lângă drum şi fără gard/ La mine-n ramuri, poame roşii ard./ Drumeţule, să iei fără sfială,/ Că n-ai să dai la nimeni socoteală.“ Adică şi mărul de lângă drum devenise bunul poporului, totul era al poporului, dar nu era al poporului, totul era al partidului. Deci noi depindeam de acea staţie de radioficare. La ea m-am dus într-o zi, cu acordeonul, la 12 ani, şi am zis: „Sunt băiatul lui Tudor Zamfir, zis Băcanul“. Aşa era el cunoscut în acel târguşor de vreo 7.000–8.000 de oameni. „Şi ce vrei să faci?“ „Să vă cânt la staţie, că am auzit că mai vin pe aici unii, lăutari.“ „Ştii să cânţi ceva?“ „Da.“ „Bine, mă, hai, cântă! Ai microfonul acolo, te anunţ: «Băiatul lui Tudor Zamfir, Băcanul, Gheorghe Zamfir, în vârstă de 12 ani, cântă pentru dumneavoastră la acordeon.»“ Asta a fost tot. Am cântat câteva melodii, le-a plăcut mult, tata era fericit, tot târgul vuia. Una din dorințele sale cele mai arzătoare fiind să cânte la acordeon cu taraful de țigani. În 1955, la vârsta de 14 ani, tatăl său îl înscrie la Școala de muzică nr. 1 din București (astăzi Liceul de Muzică Dinu Lipatti), cu intenția de a studia acordeonul, dar... este acceptat la clasa de nai a profesorului Fănică Luca, unde demonstrează o abilitate extraordinară pentru acest instrument. Iată cum evocă Gheorghe Zamfir întâlnirea sa cu Fănică Luca:. („Asta se întâmpla prin 1950, când am fost acceptat la Școala Specială de Muzică numărul 1 din București. Aveam 14 ani. Am reușit la examen, în comisia care alegea elevii după conformația fizică. Acești profesori, din comisie, erau vreo 14-15. Eu venisem de la țară, habar n-aveam cine e Fănică Luca. (Văzând că am configurația pentru acest instrument, Fănică Luca mi-a zis să încerc să cânt la nai. Eu i-am zis că refuz și am plecat din clasă. Tata m-a împins din nou, mi-a dat și două palme, și așa am rămas cu titlu de încercare la nai, pentru două luni, dacă nu-mi convine, pot să plec, ceea ce s-a și întâmplat.) După două luni, din cauza efortului fizic am părăsit naiul. M-am dus la clasa de contrabas. M-a căutat Fănică Luca, la câteva zile, prin școală, mi-a dat câteva palme și m-a întors la clasă. Mi-a zis: «Cu trei melodii am cucerit Globul Pământesc. Tu ai să-l cucerești mai mult ca mine. Nu-ți dai seama că ai talent?». Și am rămas la clasă.” (Sunt fapte petrecute acum 60 de ani. Mai ţine cont cineva de valorile de acum 60 de ani, când eu ascult la radio numai melodii americane, care mi-au făcut creierul calendar timp de două luni, pe plajă? În fine, în fiecare oraş şi orăşel, se făceau staţii de radioficare. În fiecare casă, exista un difuzor, care era pus pe perete pentru a nu putea fi atins de copii, şi avea o limbă. O dădeai la dreapta, se deschidea. O dădeai la stânga, se închidea. Trebuia să-l ţii deschis tot timpul, pentru că te controla poliţia. La ora 6.30 dimineaţa, se anunţa: „Scularea! Aici Radio Moscova. Să învăţăm limba rusă cântând!“. Începea imnul Uniunii Sovietice...)“
